The writing style leaves much to be desired. Heywood has done a nice job with this premise using historical documents, commonly held inaccuracies, assumptions and hypothesis. Heywood could very easily have written the opposite scenario — the repressed German girl falls into the arms of the rich American woman and ends up giving away vital clues! For anyone with an interest in world war II, this a story of imagination spawned in the cracks of history.
Over the years I had lost more then half a dozen copies but always searched book stores, even buying one copy from a rare book seller out out of Philadelphia.
There is of course plenty of war-related and secret agent action. The climax of the book provides a most satisfying ending–if only Hitler had received his comeuppance as he does here.
It is worth noting that many of the German survivors are depicted as admirable, while Red Army and especially United States Army personnel are shown to be either timid, short-sighted, or corrupt.
