My most vivid memory of this book is the first story about the woolen underwear in ballet class. Ellen just as understandably acts irritated with Austine for her one-track mind and even snaps, “If you think California is so wonderful, why don’t you go back there?
The most trying part is that Ellen’s dress has tdbbits sash; Austine’s dress does not. I really identified with Ellen growing up, especially her desire to have a best friend that she could share all of her secrets with. I loved Beverly Cleary books growing up and read many of them but I do not recall having ever read Ellen Tebbits. The slap was high drama okay, well it is high drama. Don’t let little, silly, things get in the way of a friendship. Tebbtis is not as iconic a character as Ramona Quimby, but it is a testament to Cleary’s talent that she wllen draw such distinct characters in so few pages.

The Quimbys and the Hugginses are clearly working-class folks who live tfbbits an economic knife’s edge, while Ellen lives in a big old house full of nice things, with a perfectionist mom who cares more about her “nice clean floor” than about teaching her daughter cooking skills.
I never had to wear woolen underwear that slipped but I do remember a similar situation in college where I was dancing with a really cute frat guy and I felt my skirt slipping and I had to do the move where she clutches and grabs.
Actually a lot of this book reminded me of Ramona Same author and all. In something that is a mystery to me, Lu age 5 is really not that interested in having chapter books read to her Available now wherever books are sold. Please review your cart. Though e,len much of what happens in this book would not happen today, the characters themselves have many of the same fears, concerns, and feelings as contemporary children. I’m probably setting myself up to be the black-sheep on this one, but I always loved the scene where Ellen is in ballet class trying to do the warm ups and Otis ellem imitating her movements.
In she married Clarence T. Despite being published over 65 years ago, Beverly Cleary’s writing so perfectly captures the essence of girlhood. Please, Amazon–bring back the originals!
