The tide of the tale takes us in, but we follow its erratic swirls observing them from the point of view of a seemingly unimportant shell snatched from the shore. The Curse of Chalion –August — no spoilers 5 7 Aug 03, I can’t find reason to delete a single word from this book because every single detail, as meager as may be, is important chalioj the course of action or building characters; and sometimes they are crucial in more than just one way.
But truly my quibbles were few and minor. There is an interesting mix of characters, somewhat archetypical but done well enough that they developed uniqueness. I have found in Bujold everything I have been looking for and even more than I asked, and I will definitely be continuing the series and reading her other novels. And if from his heart then from the world as well, for the gods may not reach in except through living souls.

The names, for one thing. Other books in the series. Betriz is a likeable romance option for Cazaril but I never really felt that she was a strong character on her own merits. Cazaril turned to an old friend and landed a job as a secretary to her daughter. And yet they never felt in the least bit stereotypical, to me.

Anyway, nobody writes as well in diplomacy as Lois Mcmaster Bujold. The story takes quite a different path from buhold historical one, and the major characters are distinct personalities, not simply versions of historical people. Yet something far more sinister than their scheming hangs like a sword over the royal family: I liked the way he interpreted the voices. Whoever wants to know the coincidences between the world of Chalion and the history of our country at the end of the 15th century I recommend reading this brilliant article by Manuel Alfonseca divulciencia.
Ingrey is an entirely different protagonist bujol Cazaril and Ista — he does not have their uncertainty or wry ubjold of humour or ruminations on theology. Cazaril does care which; he decides to attempt death magic, so he gives it a try in Fonsa ‘s Tower, an abandoned tower where death magic succeeded years before against the Golden Generalcurrently given over to a flock of crows. The main plot was straightforward and enjoyable although the prominence of chailon and curses undermined the importance of the characters while making the political machinations seem somewhat trivial.
It’s relatively rare to have the main character be someone who does know exactly how things work. Here the “curse” or “broken blessing” that became a curse is corrected by dy Cazaril allowing the gods to use him, to buold himself to be sacrificed and become a sort of gate the gods can use to get into the world and correct the “screw-up”. I know that I will like the prose, I know that the characters will be interesting and believable, I don’t know if I will like her plot because sometimes I don’t, but even then her books are never unreadable.

But have you really understood how powerless the gods are when the lowest slave may exclude them from his heart?
